Three adventurers met in the city of Milia -- Worg, a half-orc figther; Favriel, an elven wizard; and Bastille, an elven rogue. The three were awaiting the return to Milia of their mentor Glimor Greyhaven, an eladrin Wizard of the Spiral Tower.
With Glimor more than two weeks overdue, the trio decided to set out in his wake following the only clue they had -- that Glimor had gone to a small farming village on the western borderlands, following up on rumors of the existence of a death cult devoted to Nemonad, the almost forgotten Dread Lord of Undeath. The village was called Winterhaven.
Word recommended that the trio agree on certain points of adventuring -- at first insisting on 2/3rds of the treasure for himself with 1/3 to be divided between the two elves, the group eventually agreed to split the treasure equally. Notably, however, Worg volunteered to be in charge of all collected treasure. He also stressed his plan to present himself as strong but stupid -- little more than a pack mule -- when in civilized territory.
After five days travel along the Old Emperor's Road the group was ambushed by what appeared to be kobold brigands -- five minions, a slinger and two dragonshields. Though Worg took a great deal of damage, Favriel used Cloud of Daggers and Sleep to wear down the dragonshields while Bastille took down the slinger single-handed.
They traveled on to Winterhaven, spending the night at the Ticklish Ogre. By questioning the locals they discovered two leads -- Old Elian told them Glimor had been to Winterhaven two weeks previous, seeking information on an ancient dwarven burial site to the southwest of the village and hadn't been seen since. Then, despite an initial bungled attempt by Bastille, the group's youngest member, Word and Favriel learned from an elven hunter named Ninaran that the kobolds they encountered were more than mere brigands. Ninaran believed the kobolds to be working for the leader of the death cult, and also that several members of the cult may have infiltrated Winterhaven itself. She gave them direction to the kobolds' lair, hidden behind a waterfall, and warned them against speaking too freely with the other villagers.
In the morning Worg went to procure a shovel from the general store, in order to bury the kobolds they had killed the previous day. Meanwhile, Favriel distracted the third-shift guard at the inner gate while Bastille broke into the tower of an old pigeon keeper called Vladimir. She found Vladimir still asleep, then burgled two books from his extensive library: Regarding the Latter Deities of Garrinham, and Their Relationship to the God-King and Kobolds: How They Live.
The group readied to leave Winterhaven, intending to bury their fallen kobold foes before continuing their search for Glimor.
